Dolly and Gator are a very special mother and son duo who are an example of how love and dedication can make a difference in the lives of animals and how when people work together, we are unstoppable.

Dolly was rescued by an independent group at a livestock auction.  ABC, a prominent rescue in New York took on the responsibility for her care. At 16 months old, Dolly was emaciated to the point that every bone in her body was visible. She was very sick, not to mention pregnant.

Dolly was fostered by Angelika Hastings and her family who helped her to become as healthy as possible before giving birth.  Dolly delivered four puppies.  She had a difficult time with the first and largest who wanted to come out feet first. However, after the first was successfully delivered, the rest were delivered without incident.  Unfortunately, five weeks after giving birth Dolly developed pyometra, a life-threatening infection that causes the uterus to fill with bacteria and pus.  Thankfully, emergency surgery saved her life.

Dolly has overcome a lot due to her rocky start in life.  She has struggled with a fear of men, thunderstorms and loud noises like fireworks and gunshots.  Time and love are nature’s best cure and even though her first 16 months were spent in unspeakable conditions, she has never shown aggression.

Dolly is sweet and gentle.  She was a loving mother to her pups.  She loves to run in the woods, chasing after wildlife.  She loves getting smelly and dirty and her foster mom takes it in stride knowing that this is her happy place.  Dolly is a picky eater.  She developed a taste for vanilla ice cream which was used to entice her to eat and put on weight. It’s no wonder that Angelika and family were a foster fail.

Gator, who is 7 years old, was the first of the pups in that litter delivered.  He was, by far, the largest at birth and now outweighs his mother and siblings by 30 pounds.  He is the first and only foster puppy that Angelika has ever adopted.  Gator is a very sweet and gentle giant. He loves everyone, especially children.  At two years old he started having seizures. No cause has been found for them although it is possible that his difficult delivery may be the cause. Gator is on twice daily medication to limit them.  Although the seizures traumatize his mom, Gator takes it all in stride and never complains.  He’s a happy boy and never chews on anything that he shouldn’t.  However, he likes to eat things left unattended by the person using them… like paper towels and tissues.

Angelika and family often host puppy mill foster dogs.  Dolly and Gator help teach them the ropes of learning to live in a home full of love.  They are also ambassetdors for ABC and Droopy Basset Rescue, where Angelika is the fundraising coordinator.

Dolly and Gator are an example of why rescue is so important, and they want to pay it forward.  Please vote for this mother and son duo so they can earn a month on the 2025 calendar.

Loved by Angelika and family and everyone who has ever met them.
