We got a phone call from our beloved vet, Dr. Bob.  “I have an adorable six month old basset in for neutering from the Wright County Humane Society. If you aren’t interested, you should come to meet him so you can tell people how cute he is.”

Right.  Flash, quickly renamed Wilbur, came home with us the same day.  At six months, we were Willie’s third family.  He was a puppy mill puppy and had been purchased at the HarMar Pet shop at eight weeks old by a young man who had no idea that a basset needs company and attention.  He spent long hours in a crate.  The young man kept him a month, then gave him to friends who had family and kids, but not much time for a puppy. Willie howled, a lot.  There were complaints.  So, Willie ended up at the Humane Society for a week, and then to us, for 14 years.

At 7 months old we loaded Willie as well as Copper and Buddy the notabasset into the van and headed out for a three week road trip to the BHCA Nationals and points beyond.  He was a perfect traveler.  It was the first of many trips to basset rescue events all over the Midwest and East Coast.

He wasn’t the perfect basset.  He ate multiple CPAP masks until we got trained to pick them up.  Many other things had toothmarks in them.  Loaves of bread disappeared from the counter, then half a fruitcake disappeared.  We caught him at that one and he was introduced to hydrogen peroxide. Then there was the chocolate incident.

Willie developed glaucoma at age nine.  He was a model patient, enduring exams, needles in the eye and endless drips with a wagging tail.   We were able to keep the eyesight in one eye for four years, an unheard of time.  He had a paper written on him.

We sent Willie to the Bridge at the age of 14 years and three month. Like so many others, Willie had developed cancer.  He was the last of our ‘old guys’ and our world is emptier without him.
